i am so SO FED UP with it! Causing staffing problems at work for me and others living further away and unable to get in. Unfortunately, i dont have any skiis - we live on a hill just a couple of inches under the height to be classed as a mountain! I am in charge at work so have needed to co ordinate staffing - they have been great - staying at each others houses and keeping things going but I have felt so helpless - i have been able to do some work from home but it has made me feel like getting a job closer to home. i talked about it with Paul.... and guess what the local paper has just been delivered with a Manager job much nearer to my home, less money but i would save on fuel.... but i would lose my nhs pension tho' :(
All these things to weigh up... i do love my job but i used to work for the organsation that's advertising a few years ago... so have got some deciding to do...
Be careful all of u especially as i heard unlike usual when the temperature rises if more snow on the way it is not expected to this time - very cold winds coming, not looking forward to them, had a taster this afternoon VERY cold here...... Stay tucked up in the warm if u can!

Think the snow might be thawing here, or is it wishful thinking? There were huge pawprints in the snow, too large for a cat or fox, can't imagine what it could be. Looks like a panther! They went all round the garden, down to the pond........ very mysterious!

I think I'll cancel my dentist appt for the morning, as well as the snow I've got a cold now. Feeling really cold today, draped in blankets, wearing fingerless gloves, on top of layers of clothes and long johns. I wish it would warm up a bit.

Hoping for a thaw here - not quite happening yet tho' but some signs and the Met ofice say not as bad as they thought today...
What lessons are you starting Amanda? Best stay in if still icy. .....is it driving lessons? Definitely not a good start in this weather :(
I heard about a fight in a supermarket during the snow - and it all started over a trolleyfull of bread!
Lyn wonder what that was by the pond... ? Hope you feel better soon and the thaw warms things up for you and bigfoot does a runner!!!
melly - my job is looking after people with learning disabilities - they've been stuck in in this weather - too dangerous to go out pavements like ice rinks -
we'll all be so glad when gets back to normal again.
Fingers crossed, that wont be long.
Soph and Jess have really enjoyed sledging tho'
Looks like schools open tomorrow for those who can get in... not sure if thats us yet....
Take care evryone :)
Love Liz xxxxx

Hi Liz,

I used to be a day centre worker for people with severe learning disabilities- it was the best job in the world. Where do you work and what age are the people you care for?

Well, call me mad, but we home school! Our children have never stepped foot in a school and are all hopefully going to be home schooled all the way to Uni/college....

It is a vocation and we love it passionately, well, I do and Mark supports me wholeheartedly. It is a great sacrifice and very challenging but so worthwhile I cannot explain! I (sort of) plan lessons, at least an idea of what they're doing and then let it flow! LOL It is becoming harder now the older two are 13 and (just!) 12!

Love,
Amanda

Hi Amanda
I work for a big organisation in a little home - there are 5 middle aged-ish men - all VERY different people, all VERY special individuals... :) :) :) :) :)
i do love it but big increase in targets / computer systems this year has been bit difficult as my job requires i provide care support as well as managing the home - quite a juggling act at times.... tricky with larger organisation... means strong business focus has to be well balanced to maintain personal focus... some changes have not bode well with RA, some changes have impacted on my health.... :(
...but i have stood up and spoken out.... not always easy but i did it... always want to provide the best for the people we support....
& i got very good support from Access to work who helped me with RA stuff...
im now thinking about applying for a new similar job closer to home i sent off for application form to a smaller organisation i worked for a few years back, think i will apply and then weigh things up, see if i am who they are looking for and vice versa.....

Home schooling - i think its fantastic ThumpUp - we were brought up with my mum, gran and auntie... My auntie (our legal guardian) was a secondary school teacher but for a few years before she retired she lived her dream of having her own private school.. only a few pupils - my sister was one - but it was lovely and SO personalised - i would LOVE to know more about your experiences - it sounds amazing! My Auntie strted to teach me A levels & i hoped 2 go on 2 university... but she became poorly and passed away soon after - ...i didnt want anyone else to teach me those subjects so i went into social care as a complete change... now im back - slowly studying towards an OU degree and loving it... :)
With home schooling theres such a lot of useful support online eg for languages, i think it's fabulous - wish we lived nearer... i could be your supply teacher - i dont know what id teach tho'... perhaps i could be the dinner lady! ;)
look forward to hearing more xxxxx
Girls went back to school this morning - ....well they got on the bus for 10 minutes but it got stuck and they have now just got back home - more snow suggested for 2morrow... im supposed to go to work this afternoon - Pauls going to take me in all being well - as from our house its downhill ungritted for a couple of miles all the way to the main road so im really hoping Paul can take me in later, bit scary....
....Think im starting to get S.A.D. (Snow Affected Disorder) Roll on SUMMER!!!!!!!!

It's been snowing again here since about 3am!
I thought we'd had the last of it yesterday but no.
I think the whole country will have a nervous breakdown if it goes on much longer!
Hope you manage to get to work Liz.

It's really thawing here now thank goodness.

It's been difficult to get bread and milk in the supermarkets here- I even bought some flour and yeast then realised that my hands can't cope with kneading!!!

Well, I am still IN the house! I cannot shop online as they're not delivering until Thursday! Mark will be home by Weds night anyway. I am going to send Ben and Marie shopping for essentials tomorrow, like milk, cream and eggs! oh and tea bags even though I have made the decision no more tea after 6pm...making spiced chai tea though and chocolate fraud here....gorgeous..

Lizzie, I will have to e/mail you about HSing (home sch) as there is so much to say! LOL You sound as if you had a lovely upbringing surrounded by extended family, how it should be. Why don't you HS, sounds like you're keen!

It is liberating though- today we looked up when some of the houses and manors open to go and visit - they're espcially fascinatd with priest's holes at the moment and I want to take them abck to Baddersley Clinton as it is just wonderful there.... I may do a tour of the UK visiting all the sites, LOLOL...

Love,
Amanda

Looking at the weather might be a good idea for Ben and Marie to go early due to more snow forecast and to beat the rush! Maybe consider bread making - Maria's right - kneading is hard work but maybe tire them all out and then all have a nice afternoon snooze!
Hope this next batch of snow is not too bad i managed to get to work yesterday - Paul took me to and fro yesterday and doing the same today. Today i'm taking my toothbrush and pj's just in case.....
My friend used to live nearby and she had a little boy who was diagnosed with autism - i supported her to develop activity sessions with her son - one of the most rewarding and inspirational things i have ever done...
I think it must take a great deal of confidence and organisation to home school - not to mention very hard work!!! Although, the world's your oyster really and it is possible to build in new learning experiences and challenges to every day but i do appreciate it must be hard work for you and must be challenging at times! I really admire what you are doing, is there a local network?
I think i would need a helpdesk.... especially with maths... - "Help - we're stuck!" LOL! xxx
At the moment, the girls are both doing very well at local secondary school so would be loathe to change things now - we are very fortunate to have a very good school nearby. As with everything in life its all about weighing up the positives and negatives and doing the right thing for you - Sophie has her heart set on being a teacher one day so maybe she'll have her own school and i can be her assistant! ;)
love Liz xx

I'm fed up with it too, no signs of a thaw here and we've had more snow this afternoon.
The icicles are about 4 feet long now!

Hi Lizzie

My daughter Lucy teaches at a school for pupils with learning disabilities, she loves it and the children. I think it gives her such a lot of satisfaction, although she can only work 3 days a week, as she has ME.

With regard to breadmaking, I use a Kenwood Chef to make it, with the dough hook. It was my mum's and has been so useful. While the cold weather has been here I've been making loads of bread, and soup. The bread is great with soup, or home-made raspberry jam.
